On Friday August 19th, I was privileged to play with the Kevin Borich Express on the first of their two Perth gigs. Also on the bill was Mike de Velta, who played up a storm. My band, Jim Awram (bass) and Troy Brazier (drums) were excellent, and the set went down a storm. It was great to play some instrumentals after a long break, and they felt great. Kevin was awesome, and I'm looking forward to doing it again the next time they're in town!

The first half of 2011 has been a hectic one, with a few projects either starting up or gaining new impetus. The focus is (thankfully!) once more coming around to music, and quite a bit of music has been made, with more to come.

Lady Zeppelin has been received extremely well by all who have seen the show - the band is tight and professional, and a pleasure to play with. Donna is killing it out front, and we're planning to add an axtra dimension to the show by introducing the Lady Zeppelin Rock Show, which will include classic rock tunes from the 70's and 80's as well as prime Zeppelin cuts.
I am now into recording for the long-awaited Resonance Project album. I'm looking forward to finally doing these great songs justice with a high quality recording, and writing a few new tracks to complete the track list. After the album will come some shows, which will be something worth seeing.

In August I play my first instrumental gig for quite some time, supporting Kevin Borich Express at the Charles Hotel. After some initial trepidation, the first rehearsal of the GG Band laid all of my fears to rest. Everyone has done their homework, and Jim Awram and Troy Brazier make a dangerous rhythm section. It's inspiring to play with such talented musicians, and I'm hoping for a great set at the Charles.

It's finally been announced - planning for the inaugural Fire in the Hole Music Festival is underway, and initial indications suggest that we may just be on to something, bringing the best of WA rock bands together for West Coast music extravaganza. Twelve bands are named on the bill featuring two stages, and I am proud to be headlining the event. My set will include a cross section of my musical output from the last decade, and some special guests will be joining me to make it a gig to remember. I hope some of you can join me. :o)

Peace,
G.

Finley Ricestrippers B&S Ball 2011 & More...

The Prairie Oysters

G’day
How’s it going? Saturday the 21st of May, we had the pleasure of playing at the Finley Ricestrippers BnS Ball. This was a gig that ticked all the boxes when you ask a musician to define a dream gig. We arrived in Finley around lunch time and made our way to the show grounds. The place was filling up fast with utes and camp sites full of people from all over the place.
As we arrived, the lads from Last Chance, the other band working with us were there and we introduced ourselves. We’d never met before this gig and we hit it off really well. Top blokes and a really good band too. So we’re hanging around back stage there for a while. We set up our gear, sound checked and spent the rest of the afternoon having a look around. We could even tell as early as 4pm that people were there to have a good time. We met people from all over NSW, Victoria and even South Australia. Many miles were traveled to get to this event.
At around 5pm we checked in to our motel and got ready. By the time we got back at 7pm, the show grounds were chockers. More cars had showed up and campfires were lit and things were starting to rev up (pardon the pun). The crew from the Finley Apex Club looked after us. They served us dinner and we were treated to the best damned roast beef rolls this side of Burke. We kicked back had a few drinks and watched as the gates opened. A huge tent was set up for this event. Think of a circus tent with open sides. It was massive. By 8pm,1500 people were in the tent area. Last Chance started up and from that point right up to the last note of the night the crowd did not stop. Both bands were warmly received by the audience, they screamed, yelled and sang along. It was a lot of fun.
But OK you say, this gig is full of young people drinking Bundy and having a huge booze-up. There certainly was Bundy flowing and more than a few sore heads the next day. But what makes these gigs unique is the fact that the 18+ crowd sang along, word for word, to songs that were written before they were even born. All requests were for Creedence, ACDC, Brooks and Dunn, Steve Earle etc. We asked why and their response was the same. “We love the old stuff. The stuff on the radio today is crap”... And mate there is nothing like the sound of 1500 people singing along to Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence.
To top it off they even liked our original material and some of the older country stuff by Merle Haggerd, Marty Stuart, Johnny Cash etc. We ended the night with both bands on stage doing the super-jam with Copperhead Road and Sweet Home Alabama and even after that the crowd wanted more. The night finished for the bands at 1am but we were sure the punters were going to keep going a while longer. Judging by the breakfast next morning, many of them will have trouble remembering the night before!! We went back for breakfast, once again hosted by the Apex Club and headed off back to Melbourne. Finley rocked that night and we are already talking about the possibility of doing it all again in 2012. Why did it tick all the boxes? A big crowd, a receptive crowd, a fun crowd who appreciated country, rock, rockabilly and who were there to enjoy themselves. It’s great to see that good songs are appreciated by all ages regardless of the genre.

I am currently working on an album of all new material and have set the tentative release date at 23 April 2011. All of the material has been written and recorded though there are few tracks on some of the numbers that I am not happy with and these of course will need to be replaced/corrected.
I have begun the mixing process on most of the numbers and hope to start mastering by the middle of the month.

Hi Everyone, I hope you people in Brisbane are dry and well, I live on the Bayside and was spared the flood....., but I think we've all suffered an emotional shock at the pure force of the weather...Our hearts and love go to all of those who've lost someone , or some property.
Take care, and look after eachother in these hard times.....as we all need that loving support.
My hope is that we will use our great Ozzie spirit to overcome this trial...and come out good. In the long run, our land will benefit, our rivers and lakes ,dams and creeks have been cleaned and are now full. And our economy should boom with all this extra work and re-building. So think positive my friends.....it's terrible right now, but it will get better....a lot better.
Above all, keep safe and keep speading the love......... Steve
